THE ART OF CAPOEIRA
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines, dance, music, philosophies and traditions of West Africa brought to Brazil during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Often regarded as the "dance fight," Capoeira features acrobatics, dance and self-defense movements that are performed in a small circle or "roda." Participants stay physically fit by masking fight techniques through dance and acrobatic movements, punctuated by a unique rhythm of instruments blended with songs of protest and encouragement.

Our Story
Capoeira Malês Maryland (CMM) is a subgroup of Capoeira Malês supervised by Mestre (master) Curisco in Seattle, Washington. Originally from Brasil, Mestre Curisco has spread contemporary Capoeira through out the United States-- practicing for over 35 years. Capoeira Malês Maryland was founded to promote the art of Capoeira in Maryland and the DMV areas and bring the art to more people in the diaspora. The organization believes that Capoeira is a tool that empowers the spirit, while building a strong mind and body.
Our History
Capoeira Malês was founded by Mestre Curisco and Mestre Lua Branca after emigrating from Brazil to the United States and Canada respectively. Their aim is to share their love of Capoeira and their wealth of experience with students, based on their shared values of respect, discipline and tradition. Not only are Mestre Curisco and Mestre Lua Branca committed to the preservation and values of Capoeira as an art, but also to disseminating the Afro-Brazilian culture worldwide and passing on these values to their students.
Capoeira Malês - Maryland is committed to making arts accessible to the community by offering workshops and providing a supportive community alternative to youth, teens, and adults alike at an affordable or free cost.
